The mere fact that socially conscious people (such as myself, hopefully) were born and raised in the United States of America, which was built on the blood and toil of Native Americans and Slaves, does not validate racism, sexism, a power hierarchy, or any humanly unjust structure, nor does it invalidate the philosophy of (us) socially conscious Americans, as human social consciousness is a step in the progression (dare I say evolution) of humanity.
The Trump administration represents the USA at its most basic. Observers of American History, either by book or in real-time, know this. It is merely basic, not great, not right, not something to write home about, yet something to, against its prevalence, make waves. The election of Trump was another setback in the United States, if not the entire industrialized world's (with Brexit being another) effort to ween itself off of base power alignments, structures, where race, ethnicity, and wealth play a controlling part. Base, foundational, but should not be controlling of the future.
I, like many others, do not like this timeline, but I try to understand it. Understanding the Trump era leads to understanding of progressives and the rising socialist rebirth, and ultimately their success. I am confident that either in 2020 or 2024, there will be a new Democratic president elected with an energy like Obama's. Carter followed Nixon, Clinton followed Reagan and Bush I, and someone else, hopefully a sharp Democratic woman, will follow Trump.
Leading up to that future: let's focus on the "problems of our time, not all time".
